Restaurant Grease Trap and Grease Interceptor Installation

Big Enough To Get The Job Done, Small Enough To Care

Grease Trap Interceptor Replacement

We have been installing and replacing grease traps in restaurants and food service facilities for years, the type that require filtration of grease effluent, fats and oils from the waste water to prevent contamination of municipal sewer systems. If you would like a quote on the cost of an automatic grease interceptor installation, call us for a free consultation on your specific make and model. One of our plumbers in Vancouver will be happy to go over your options.

Restaurant Bylaw Compliance

On October 26, 2012 Metro Vancouver implemented a bylaw with code requirements that establishes new limits on the volume of brown grease and food solids that flow out of automatic grease interceptors drain lines into sewers. Business owners not in compliance with those construction code requirements may be subject to re-inspection fees and/or a fine. Avoid these unpleasant municipality costs by ensuring you are in compliance. We'll provide a professional licensed plumber to work up a quote before starting work on the plumbing system.

If your compact kitchen grease interceptor is not code compliant and must be replaced or if you would like to discuss details on a grease interceptor to meet efficiency codes, we'll be happy to go over those details with you. For instance a 1500 gallon grease interceptor installation in commercial buildings is a little more involved than most. Our removal and replace service will provide the result you need.

Grease build-up in sewers causes them to overflow, potentially damaging homes, businesses and the environment. At least $2.7 million is spent every year to deal with the effects of hazardous brown grease, including infrastructure maintenance and managing environmental spills. When in-ground grease interceptors (or traditional grease traps) are not properly maintained, grease from commercial kitchens enter the city sewer lines and cause sewer backups.

Definition

grease trap (also known as poly grease interceptor, mechanical grease recovery device, grease capsule and grease converter) is a grease waste plumbing device (a type of trap) designed to intercept most amounts of grease, cooking oil and solids (byproduct of cooking) before they enter sewer lines. Common wastewater contains small amounts of oils which enter into septic tanks and treatment facilities from prep sinks and cookers to form a floating scum layer. This scum layer is very slowly digested and broken down by microorganisms in the anaerobic digestion process. Large amounts of oil from food wastes in restaurant kitchens can overwhelm a septic tank or sewer lines treatment facility, causing release of untreated sewage into the environment. High-viscosity fats and cooking grease such as lard solidify when cooled, and can combine with other waste to block drain pipes. Grease capacity of the model being used will be an important consideration.

Grease traps have been used since Victorian days for proper disposal of fat from cooking: Nathaniel Whiting obtained the first patent in the late 1800s. The traps reduce the amount of fats, oils and greases (FOGs) that enter sewers. They comprise boxes within the drain run that flows between the sinks in a kitchen and the sewer system. They only have kitchen waste water flowing through them, and do not serve any other drainage system, such as toilets. They can be made from many different materials, such as stainless steel, plastics, concrete & cast iron. The grease capacity can range from 35 liter to 45,000 liters and greater. They can be located above ground, below ground, inside the kitchen or outside the building.

Types of Commercial Grease Interceptors:

  • Zurn z1170 grease trap
  • GB-250 grease trap
  • Jr smith grease trap
